The Rising Star of Pop-Opera: The Journey of Johannes Pietsch (JJ)

In the modern musical landscape, genre-bending artists continually redefine how we experience sound. Among them, Johannes Pietsch—professionally known by his stage name JJ—has quickly carved out a unique space for himself. Blending the dramatic grandeur of classical opera with the infectious energy of mainstream pop, this young Austrian artist captured international attention by making history on one of the world’s biggest musical stages.

Early Roots and Multicultural Background

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch grew up in a multicultural household. His father, an Austrian IT specialist, introduced him to classical opera, while his Filipino mother introduced him to lively family karaoke sessions focused on pop music.

Most of his childhood was spent in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he attended school before his family moved back to Vienna in 2016. This rich blend of cultural influences deeply shaped his artistic identity. Not only did it help him master multiple languages—including German, English, and Tagalog—it also planted the seeds for his signature stylistic fusion of pop and opera.

Refining the Craft

Pietsch’s dedication to his vocal training is rooted in rigorous classical education. He attended the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later pursued further vocal studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Before achieving mainstream success, Pietsch tested his talents on various competitive television platforms:

  • The Voice UK (2020): After narrowly missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, he turned to the UK series, successfully advancing to the Knockout rounds under the mentorship of will.i.am.
  • Starmania (2021): He competed in the fifth season of the popular Austrian television music casting show, reaching the first final show.

Eurovision Glory and Historic Triumph

Pietsch’s defining career breakthrough came when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Performing under the moniker JJ, he sang “Wasted Love,” a powerful pop-opera track he co-wrote alongside music producer Thomas Thurner and former Austrian Eurovision representative Teodora Špirić.

On May 17, 2025, JJ triumphed in the Grand Final, securing a total of 436 points (dominating the jury vote with 258 points and pulling strong support from the public televote). This victory marked several historic milestones:

  • He became the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century (and the 2000s overall).
  • He made history as the first Eurovision champion of Southeast Asian descent.

Distinctive Musical Style and Artistry

As a sopranist (a male soprano / specialized countertenor), JJ possesses a breathtaking vocal range capable of hitting soaring high notes with intense emotional clarity. Rather than treating pop and opera as separate entities, he bridges them seamlessly. His influences range from legendary vocal powerhouses like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to classical staging traditions.
