The Boy Behind the Screen: Growing Up as Song Kang

Long before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” and captured global hearts in hit K-dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just an ordinary, quiet kid growing up in Suwon, South Korea.

While fans around the world see him as a fiercely confident, charismatic leading man, his early years tell a surprisingly different story.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a close-knit family of four, which includes his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. Athletics and art ran deep in his household. His father was a former artistic gymnast, and his mother worked as a piano teacher.

Because of his family’s background, physical activity was a natural part of his daily life. Even as a child, he inherited an active spirit that later helped him easily transition into demanding physical roles, martial arts training, and intense gym routines. At the same time, growing up around his mother’s musical profession exposed him early to the arts, giving him a quiet appreciation for creativity and the piano.

The Quiet Kid Who Sat in the Corner

Despite his striking good looks and eventual career in the spotlight, Song Kang has frequently described himself as having been remarkably shy and introverted during his school days.

In interviews, he has confessed that he was so bashful he would deliberately choose to eat lunch in the far corner of the cafeteria just to avoid drawing attention to himself. When he first went home and boldly announced to his mother that he wanted to pursue a career in acting, her initial reaction was one of pure disbelief. Knowing how quiet and reserved he was, she jokingly told him, “What kind of acting can someone as introverted as you do? Go learn a proper skill instead!”

From Blueprints to the Silver Screen

Before acting became his ultimate calling, Song Kang’s childhood and adolescent ambitions shifted quite a bit. At one point, after seeing striking architectural pictures and designs, he dreamed of becoming an architect or a furniture designer. However, he eventually abandoned those blueprints because he honestly had no idea where or how to begin.

The turning point came when he watched the iconic film Titanic. Captivated by the power of the screen and inspired heavily by Leonardo DiCaprio’s legendary performances, a spark was lit. He decided that storytelling through acting was the path he wanted to follow, setting him on a dedicated journey toward studying Film Arts at Konkuk University and stepping into the entertainment industry.

Looking Back

Today, the shy boy who hid in the corner of the cafeteria has transformed into one of South Korea’s most recognizable global faces. Yet, looking back at his upbringing—balanced by a gymnast father, a musician mother, and a deeply introverted personality—it’s clear that those quiet formative years helped shape the grounded, thoughtful actor he is today.
